E-books

E-books is not something I am terribly familiar with. Of course I have heard of the Kindles and Nooks, etc but I do not own one...as of yet :) I think it is a really interesting concept that many schools both higher ed and high schools are looking at switching from textbooks to e-books.

However, what has intrigued me the most is an article I found on the trends for publishing e-books.
I have always dreamed of publishing a book one day...not sure why, I am not a great writer by any means. I have tons of ideas of things I would like to write about...no idea where to start and the idea of trying to find a publisher, etc is just too daunting.

Maybe the e-books will open the door to writer's that only dreamed of being published, the library may become much larger in the future...now to figure out a pen name :)

  1. That's a great point, e-books making publishing easier and will in turn get more people writing! That makes sense to me! Andy Rooney was talking about e-books last night on 60 Minutes and did not like them, he thinks books will no longer be published, and his final thought was I hope they don't make authors extinct. I like your idea better!! :)

  2. Since I am a photographer, publishing your own books became popular with the advent of the digital press and applications such as iPhoto that uploaded to apple and you could create your own book. Now there are all sorts of press quality sites: Blurb, Mpix, Shutterfly and practically any online lab has a book product. Many photographers are using PDF to sell ebooks as a download.

Just learned about an app called OverDrive Media Console (http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/) that lets you check out books from the local library and read them on your smartphone, iPad or iPod.

  3. Glenda--
I use Shutterfly to make my own photo books and have become addicted! It is so much easier, faster and cheaper than scrapbooking (way to many decisions to make on that one).

  4. I LOVE my Kindle. There's a ban on it though since I have a (bad) habit of reading none stop. I can't afford this while teaching :) Although I still collect paper books - there are certain authors I love which I think are considered classics anyways, e.g. Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, I find my Kindle so convenient. Yes it lacks the library borrowing option (which the Nook is capable of... it's just a different format... a format that Amazon doesn't honor) but the mere convenience of being able to get any books sold on Amazon within less than a minute from pretty much anywhere (haven't tried it in Timbuktu) is fabulous. This was where the ban came in. Over Christmas break I read one novel at a day and a half rate; 250-400 page books.

I am not a good writer either but would love to try writing. My grandpa was a published writer and we were very close. It's mostly because of him I want to try. Maybe I should find me a name too ;)
